ASCRS Foundation: Improving the World's Vision

The ASCRS Foundation delivers humanitarian eye care to those who need it most in the United States and abroad.

More than 85 million people are visually impaired worldwide. Globally, cataracts are the second leading cause of visual impairment and the leading cause of preventable blindness in the developing world.

The ASCRS Foundation supports physician education and provides humanitarian cataract surgery in the United States and overseas. Through its programs and partnerships, the Foundation works to maximize the benefits of modern ophthalmology and to treat thousands of patients in need each year.

Help Unlock the Aerie Match

Since 2018, Aerie Pharmaceuticals has encouraged attendees at the ASCRS-ASOA Annual Meeting to support the ASCRS Foundation through a matched donation. In just two years, this program has helped restore the sight of more than 460 patients in need. Aerie is generously continuing its match, doubling the impact of donations made beginning on June 23rd up to $30,000. Donations made previously through Annual Meeting registration will be included in our progress! We will need your help to unlock their gift. Heart for Humanity- 2020 Chang Humanitarian Award Honoree Announced

In 2020, the ASCRS Foundation is honored to bestow the Chang Humanitarian Award on a man who has given over sixty-years of his life to the cause of sight in West Africa: Dr. Lowell Gess. Possessing a quiet and gentle spirit, Dr. Gess’ humanitarian journey began before he even chose ophthalmology. And now a half-century later, his namesake eye hospital in the Sierra Leone stands as testament to his life’s work.
