ASCRS Foundation 2021 August Newsletter

“Immediately seeing my doctor's face was a great feeling and then my children came in and I could see their faces too. Now, I am able to get around the house independently. I can do the things that I loved to do before, like cooking, reading and even watching the news. I still can't believe things changed for my me. I am very happy.” – Balchisu, Operation Sight Patient

Without access to cataract care, daily life routines are rapidly restricted. Employment loss is common, as are falls and daily anxiety associated with never seeing clearly again. Your support and volunteerism opens doors for charitable care and drives lasting change for patients and their local communities! The gift of sight sparks a heartfelt appreciation in our patients as their lives expand and see their loved ones again.

On November 30, 2021, the ASCRS Foundation will again participate in Giving Tuesday, a global day of giving that kicks off the holiday season. Watch your email for inspiring stories of how your support changes lives. During 2021, the Foundation has seen a dramatic increase in demand for our charitable programs. We hope you will save the date for this important day.

The ASCRS Foundation's charitable cataract surgery program, Operation Sight, needs your help! There are eligible, fully-vetted patients on our waitlist hoping to be matched with volunteer surgeons. We urgently need your support in the following areas:

- East-Central Florida
- Northern and Central Tennessee
- Northwestern Georgia
- Northwestern Maryland
- Southeast Michigan
- Southern Texas
- Southern Kansas

Please reply to this email if you or a colleague can provide charitable cataract surgery to a pre-screened patient today!

When you accept an eligible patient, your name and practice will be featured on the ASCRS Foundation website in celebration of Operation Sight's National Sight Week celebration. Check out your colleagues who are already involved here!

Deadline Approaching: 2022 ASCRS Foundation Grants and Awards

The ASCRS Foundation Chang-Crandall Humanitarian Award was established to honor and recognize outstanding humanitarian work in addressing cataract blindness. Each year the awardee is celebrated at the ASCRS Annual Meeting, and a $50,000 prize is made in their honor to a charitable ophthalmology organization of their choice.

The Young Eye Surgeons International Service Grant was created to inspire young eye surgeons to become involved with global eye care on a long-term basis. Working with the ASCRS Foundation and its international partners, recipients develop a customized international volunteer plan that provides the opportunity for a young eye surgeon to learn first-hand the intricacies behind global eyecare efforts.

The deadline for both opportunities is October 15, 2021. Click here for more information.
