Giving Tuesday Leadership Challenge Announced!
The Leaderships of ASCRS, the ASCRS Foundation and ASOA have joined forces as part of a membership challenge to "Give Sight, Change Lives." They will match the first $21,500 in donations received for Giving Tuesday, November 30.
This match comes at a critical time. Operation Sight, the ASCRS Foundation’s domestic charitable cataract surgery program has seen a significant increase in applications resulting from the employment, insurance and economic impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic. The Foundation has helped deliver more surgeries than in any year prior, and for many patients, the gift of sight holds the key to regaining employment and providing for their families.

NATIONAL SIGHT WEEK: A CELEBRATION OF CHANGING LIVES
National Sight Week provides a glimpse into the year-round impact our Operation Sight volunteers have on the lives of patients unable to afford or access cataract surgery. This year, we proudly celebrated those volunteers and practices who have provided or pledged an Operation Sight surgery in 2021. Without access to cataract care our Operation Sight patients face countless obstacles; our volunteers are the everyday heroes that lessen the burden.
Dr. Jeffrey Levenson from Levenson Eye Associates was among the many volunteers featured for their impact during National Sight Week. In a powerful story, Dr. Levenson shares how a patient with bilateral cataracts faced blindness and without insurance or a job "he didn't know where to turn."
"I asked him a little about himself, and he told me that he used to be a master carpenter, and a skilled woodworker. Right then and there, we made a deal: I‘d do my best to get him seeing again and back to doing what he loved; he’d stick around to see it through....He came back last week, out of the blue, with a present. Maximize Your 2021 Gift to the Foundation - Charitable Giving Benefits under CARES Act Extended
The CARES Act expanded the deductibility of charitable contributions, and in 2021 new provisions were added making this year a favorable time to support the ASCRS Foundation.
Individual taxpayers who take the standard deduction may deduct charitable gifts up to $300 and married couples who file joint returns can deduct charitable gifts up to $600. Individual taxpayers who itemize their deductions may now deduct certain charitable contributions up to 100% of the taxpayer's adjusted gross income. Prior to the CARES Act, taxpayers were limited to deducting 60% of the taxpayer’s adjusted income. Individual taxpayers can continue to carry forward any excess charitable contributions for five years, but the enhanced 100% deduction limitation is set to expire after 2021. In 2021, corporations may deduct charitable gifts up to 25% of the corporation’s taxable income (increased from 10%).For more information on ways to support the Foundation, click here.
