ASCRS FOUNDATION ANNOUNCES 2021 CHANG-CRANDALL HUMANITARIAN AWARD CO-WINNERS
The ASCRS Foundation is proud to announce Geoff Tabin, MD and Sanduk Ruit, MD as the 2021 Chang-Crandall Humanitarian co-awardees. Endowed by a generous gift from David and Victoria Chang, and presented each year at the ASCRS Annual Meeting, the ASCRS Foundation Chang-Crandall Humanitarian Award was established to honor and recognize outstanding humanitarian work with a focus on cataract blindness and disability. In 2020, the ASCRS Foundation renamed its highest honor the Chang-Crandall Humanitarian Award in posthumous recognition of Alan S. Crandall, MD's exemplary life and commitment to charitable service.
Drs. Tabin and Ruit embody the spirit of the award through their 25-year dedication to humanitarian work in some of the most impoverished areas of the Himalayas and Sub-Saharan Africa. “It gives us great joy to receive this incredible honor which is associated with two of our heroes, David Chang and the late Alan Crandall; legends of global medicine and among the most dedicated and kindest ophthalmologists we know. NATIONAL VOLUNTEER WEEK: SPOTLIGHT YOUR EYECON!
Each year the ASCRS Foundation’s domestic charitable cataract surgery program, Operation Sight recognizes its volunteers and supporters during National Volunteer Week for the immeasurable impact they make in the lives of Operation Sight patients year-round. We invite you to join the digital celebration to be held April 18-24, 2021. This year will include special recognition of Operation Sight EYEcons. VOLUNTEER SPOTLIGHT: REGINA SUN, MD AT BERKELEY EYE CENTER
Operation Sight volunteer Regina Sun, MD of Berkeley Eye Center is a champion when it comes to making cataract care accessible in her local community of Pearland, TX. Committed to making a difference in the lives of patients in need, Dr. Sun has restored sight to countless Operation Sight patients, addressing the growing need in the Houston area.
We had the opportunity to connect with Dr. Sun recently, where we discussed her contributions and support of Operation Sight.
Through your volunteerism, you make cataract care accessible to patients, who do not have the means to receive the care they need. Has Operation Sight provided a vehicle that enables you to give back on a regular basis?
Dr. Sun: “I went into ophthalmology hoping to serve in missions throughout my career. With small kids and the pandemic, it is difficult to participate in international mission trips at this time. It has been so wonderful, however, to have the opportunity to use my skills locally to help those in need. These patients are so grateful to have cataract surgery and are willing to drive a long way to get their surgery done. I did not realize there were so many patients who need help in my local area and I'm thankful that I can help these patients without having to do any travel.”

The ASCRS Foundation is grateful to the donors whose generosity makes our mission possible. We are pleased to launch our new donor portal available to all donors who have made an online contribution through the Foundation website in 2021.
