Karen S. Bachman, COE, COMT, CCRC

Karen started her career in ophthalmology in Scranton , PA in 1979, first as a front desk receptionist then proceeded to learn technical skills obtaining her COA, COT and then COMT status. She is currently also a COE and has worked as a clinic director, compliance officer, coder and practice administrator. Prior to her position at The Eye Institute of Utah in Salt Lake City, she worked for 27 years at Cincinnati Eye Institute in Cincinnati, OH. Karen enjoys working in clinical research as a CCRC, along with technician training.

Austin Bird
Director of Managed Care, Berkeley Eye Center

As the Director of Managed Care for Berkeley Eye Center, Austin coordinates all contracting and payor relationships for 38 physicians across 20 locations and 2 ASCs. Prior to joining Berkeley, Austin worked at a medical management company where he managed several full-risk IPAs in Houston and a direct health plan network encompassing nine counties in east Texas. Through successful coordination of utilization management, coding, and HEDIS quality compliance Austin led the IPAs to achieve a physician incentive distribution in the tens of millions annually.

Heidi Campbell, HCA
Director, Clinical Operations, Duke Ophthalmology

Heidi Campbell, COT is currently the Director of Clinical Operations for Ophthalmology for the Private Diagnostic Clinics, PLLC at Duke University Health System. Prior to serving as Director of Clinical Operations, Heidi exceled in her career as a Health Care Administrator (HCA) for 6 successful Duke satellite practices. During her time as HCA she was responsible for effective changes in clinic flow across the satellite clinics, resulting in a 30% increase in arrived visit volume in a 2-year time span with increased patient and employee satisfaction scores. She has standardized diagnostic testing across clinic sites as well as creating and implementing a point system used to hold technicians accountable for daily performance, allowing clinics to flex staff as needed. Performance improvement credentials include four years with the Joint Commission Accreditation and Patient Safety Office where she maintains an active role as a Surveyor. In addition to her role as a Surveyor she also oversees the Ambulatory Falls Prevention program ensuring that all Falls Champions are properly trained to ensure the highest level of patient safety in our clinics.

 

Albert Castillo
CEO, San Antonio Eye Center

Albert Castillo has over 17 years of experience working in ophthalmology and teaching physicians the “Business of Ophthalmology”. He is currently the CEO for San Antonio Eye Center, a 20 physician multispecialty practice in San Antonio, Texas. Albert also consults for many practices in the San Antonio Community as well as throughout the state of Texas. Over the years Albert has been very involved in serving as the Chair of the AAOE board, a Member of the OOSS Board, and teaches courses at both the ASOA and AAOE annual meetings. Additionally, Albert serves as the OOSS Member Services Consultant which is responsible for participating in the development of education content and member resources provided to OOSS members. When not focused on Ophthalmology, Albert enjoys spending time with his wife, Rheannon and three daughters, outdoors, fishing, swimming, horseback riding, and boating.

Daniel D. Chambers, MBA, COE
Executive Director, Key Whitman Eye Center

Dan Chambers received his MBA in management and health systems from the University of Connecticut in 1975 & has been in health care administration for over 42 years, with experience ranging from Hospital administration, Surgery Center development and management, Physician Management Corporations (PRG as Sr. Vice President) with 140 clinics in 26 states. Currently, Dan has been the Executive Director for the Key-Whitman Eye Center in Dallas, TX for the past 17 years. The Key-Whitman Eye Center now spans the DFW Metroplex, and has 14 doctors, 6 clinics, 1 ASCs and 1 Lasik Center with 180 employees.

Mr. Chambers also is a Board Member of Mednetworx, Inc., an I.T. hosting company. Dan is currently immediate Past President and on the national Board of Directors of the American Society of Ophthalmic Administrators (ASOA). He also serves on the Board of the National Board of Certified Ophthalmic Administrators, Central Point Surgery Center. Dan is also a frequent speaker & contributor to various journal articles on new innovations and strategies in Vision Care.

William T. Koch, COA, COE, CPC

Bill Koch has worked in the field of ophthalmology for 30 years. He is currently an Administrative Director for Texas Retina Associates in Dallas, TX. He maintains credentials as a Certified Ophthalmic Assistant (COA), Certified Ophthalmic Executive (COE) and Certified Professional Coder (CPC). Bill has published multiple articles and given multiple presentations on ophthalmic practice management topics. He is the current President-Elect of the ASOA Board of Directors.

Paul M. Larson, MBA, MMSc, COMT, COE, CPC, CPMA

San Bernardino, CA

Paul is a Senior Consultant with Corcoran Consulting Group. He began his career in ophthalmology while in the United States Navy and received his credential as a Certified Ophthalmic Medical Technologist (COMT) through the Joint Commission of Allied Health Professionals in Ophthalmology (JCAHPO). He has an MBA in Health Care Management from Regis University and an MMSc in Ophthalmic Technology from Emory University. He also maintains his Certified Ophthalmic Executive (COE), Certified Professional Coder (CPC), and Certified Professional Medical Auditor (CPMA) certifications. He served as President, Association of Technical Personnel in Ophthalmology (ATPO) on two separate occasions; in 1991 he was named a Fellow of ATPO. He served on the American Society of Ophthalmic Administrators’ (ASOA) Board of Governors as a Member-at-large from 2009-2010. He has presented nationally and regionally on both clinical and administrative topics, and has authored or co-authored many clinical and administrative articles. Paul conducts business from Corcoran Consulting Group’s Atlanta, Georgia office.

Adrienne Lloyd, MHA, FACHE
Chief Administrative Officer, Duke Eye Center

Adrienne Lloyd serves as the Chief Administrative Officer for the Duke Eye Center, where she joined in 2013, and is responsible for both clinical and academic missions. She is originally from North Carolina and holds a Bachelor of Science Degree in Public Health and a Master’s Degree in Healthcare Administration from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. She has served as adjunct faculty in the Healthcare Administration Programs at Kaplan University and is a Fellow in the American College of Healthcare Executives. She began her career at UNC Hospitals in the Department of Pediatrics and spent ten years working as a Department Administrator at Mayo Clinic, where she led various specialties including Gastroenterology, Endocrinology, Radiology and OB/GYN. She has experience managing procedural, outpatient, and inpatient practices, financial budgeting and resource management, leading facilities and space planning efforts, and implementing lean and six sigma process improvement efforts. She is happy to be back in North Carolina, with her husband and two young children, and to be a part of the Duke Eye Center team.

Nancey McCann
ASCRS Director of Government Relations

Nancey is the Director of Government Relations for ASCRS-ASOA and has served in this role for over 20 years. She and her team of Allison Dickert Madson, Tami O’Brien, and Jillian Winans keep us all informed about what is going on in the political arena and lobby both with Congress and the Administration, including regulatory agencies, on our behalf. Nancey will give a legislative and regulatory update.

E. Ann Rose is the owner and president of Rose & Associates, and is a Medicare reimbursement and compliance consultant who has been associated with the health care industry for over 30 years. Rose & Associates specializes in Medicare compliance, coding and training for physician practices with medical record auditing being their main focus. Ann is also editor and publisher of The Messenger, a newsletter written and developed specifically for the specialty of ophthalmology and serves on the editorial board of the reimbursement section of Ocular Surgery News.

Ayda Said
Director of Provider Relations, Katzen Eye Group

Ayda Said has over 20 years of experience in working with health care providers and referring doctors. She grew up in the Baltimore suburbs before heading off to the University of Maryland to obtain her Bachelor’s Degree and then onto the George Washington School of Business to receive her Master’s Degree in Health Services Administration. As part of her Master’s program, Ayda completed an administrative residency The Johns Hopkins Hospital and then went on to manage the Johns Hopkins Pain Center.

After several years at Hopkins, Ayda began working with a for-profit, health care consulting firm. As an account executive, she traveled nationally to meet with doctors and advise them as to how to grow their practices and increase referrals. She currently works for the Katzen Eye Group, Maryland’s largest private practice Ophthalmology group, managing provider relations and acting as a liaison between referring doctors and the practice. Ayda has been with Katzen for over 8 years.

In her spare time, Ayda enjoys biking, boating, traveling to new places and spending time with her family.

Kemp Shafer and Gregg Kallish are Key Account Managers for the Alcon Pharmaceuticals franchise of Novartis. In their role with Alcon, they collaborate with large Eye Care group practices to provide patient-focused solutions in an effort to enhance patient engagement, experience and overall outcomes. Gregg and Kemp each have over 16 years of industry experience with Alcon holding positions of increased responsibility. Maureen Waddle, MBA

With nearly 30 years of experience in the eye care industry, Maureen Waddle is a consultant for variety of specialty practices, though most of her work is with ophthalmic practices and ambulatory surgery centers (ASCs). Her expertise includes strategic planning and implementation, new business-line analysis and development, leadership recruiting and development, customer service, staff training, referral network development, managing the business of elective surgery, financial assessment and benchmarking, and operational efficiency.

Prior to joining BSM, Ms. Waddle served as a vice president for TLC Vision, where she provided strategic leadership and operational oversight for the western region’s refractive laser centers and mobile laser clients. And before joining TLC she served as an administrator for various practices and surgery centers in Northern California.
